What are some fun/educational games to play with my 8 month old son?
marleymang asked:
I'm a first time parent and I'm having trouble coming up with new games to play with my son. He likes peek-a-boo and playing with toys, but sometimes I'm dumbfounded in coming up with new ways to engage him. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
All of you gave great ideas... thanks!

buy him one of those animal books that have different textures in them, he will jsut love figuring out how to open and close a book, and how to touch and feel it.
also, books that make noises when you push buttons will amaze him!
my baby also loves to play ball, my partner or i sit behind him and the other across the room, and we roll it back and forth.
one last thing, is a towel. cover it with him, play tug of war, play peek a boo, you get the idea!
pretty much anything can be made into a game, my son finds it hilarious when he holds something in his mouth and i tap it with my finger or another object.

books are the best!! You can read to him every day for several minutes, even two or three times a day. There are lots of great books and many of them come in board book form now so you don’t have to worry about ripping the pages or chewing on them. Let him hold the book if he wants to or you can read one book and let him hold another one. Make it fun and pleasant. There are so many books to suggest but, jsut go to your local bookstore and get about a dozen. He will very shortly end up with a favortie one or two and want you to read that one over and over and over. That’s how kids learn — from repetition.
You could also get him some stacking/nesting blocks. That’s a good toy for his age. Or a bucket with holes of shapes in the top that he has to put the shapes through. How about some music? I like Raffi — it’s kid music that I can listen to over and over without going completely out of my mind. Puppets can be fun.
There’s no question though that books are the best and really important!!

Peek-a-Boo is great. It teaches them “object permanence”–they learn that things they can’t see are still there. It also helps them deal with separation anxiety.
Little songs and nursery rhymes, especially ones with actions would be good. “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “This Little Piggy” come to mind.
Books are really good. It is said that children should be read to a minimum of 15 minutes every day. Get them interested in reading young is my thought.
Bubbles might be fun. You could start naming his body parts for him. You can make it silly to make it more fun. You could roll a ball to him and encourage him to roll it back. You could take baby food jars, punch some holes in the top and put different (safe) things inside for him to smell. Good luck and have fun!
