Time to Get Serious About Bike Security   by Ted Caffrey

At 7:15 in the morning on Saturday 5 March, the Stolen Vehicle Unit of the Metropolitan Police Service raided Brands Hatch and examined 144 high-performance bikes of 600cc and above.

The reason? They were searching for stolen bikes or parts which had made it onto the race circuits.

It was a huge police operation with nearly 70 police officers taking part. The exits were sealed off and by the end of the day the police had found 16 stolen or rung bikes, the vast majority of which had had their frame numbers or engines modified.

According to the official police press release, the decision to raid Brands Hatch was made after police had noticed a rise in the thefts of high-performance bikes in London over the last three years. Many of these bikes, or parts taken from them, end up being used in races, and the police wanted to send a strong message to thieves that they are cracking down on them.

A Growing Problem?

Thousands of bikes are stolen in London every year. These often find their way back to the market and end up in the hands of quite innocent buyers. Many of the people who had their bikes taken away at Brands Hatch were most likely entirely unaware that they were using a stolen bike. That
