Self Development and the Way to Power - a Review by Caroline Clare
The Founding Fathers in the Declaration of Independence enshrined the principle that man is entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Rogers goes one step further and states in the opening lines of this book that all men are born happy. It is natural way of man to be happy. If he is suffering then something has gone wrong in the natural world to cause that suffering.
"Why then", you ask yourself "have we all gone so badly wrong?" With so much unhappiness and suffering in the world, is he wrong?
He makes the analogy that until we achieve what he calls spiritual illumination; it is as though we are stumbling about in the dark in an unknown room where the furniture has just been tossed about. Our progress through the room results in many knocks and bruises until we find the light switch and can see our way.
How do we find this spiritual illumination together with the natural wisdom which Rogers claims is within all of us? We are all aware, he points out, that man has developed his five senses through which we gain our knowledge of the world. Our world is still evolving and we should not presume to think that we cannot develop the Sixth Sense to take us beyond what we currently know of the world.
The day will come, he suggests, when mankind will have developed this ability to use the Sixth Sense. We may do this unconsciously and blunder along or consciously grow and evolve thus making rapid progress and growth avoiding much human misery. Just as we develop our muscles through use and exercise, so too we must use our brains in order to develop intelligent thought. Inactivity causes atrophy, while aspiration and activity mean growth, development and power.
"Happiness is the product of wisdom. To attain perfect wisdom, to comprehend fully the purpose of life, to realise completely the relationship of human beings to each other, is to put an end to all suffering, to escape every ill and evil that afflicts us. Perfect wisdom is unshadowed joy." The ills of the world - poverty, death, disease, injustice - are reactions from our ignorant blunderings and instructors that point out the better way. When we have comprehended the lessons they teach they are no longer necessary and disappear.
Each man must make his own journey, no-one else can do it for him. There are three things he needs to acquire to succeed on this journey - an ardent desire, an iron will and an alert intelligence. If you don't possess them already, they can be developed.
Desire propels us forward. From the most basic desire for food and shelter through to acquiring great wealth and riches. It is not the final result that is the reward but what we learn along the way that enriches us. A weak will can be confirmed into a strong will, just as with the growth of our brains, by use. Desire can propel us to strengthen the will. A desire for education, or for success, or for riches, can impel us to overcome weak will power and help us take the necessary steps which may not be within our usual nature. Study will help to improve intellect as will visualisation and meditation.
One can question Rogers' assertion that we are all moving towards acquiring a sixth sense, but his ideas are sound and have stood the test of time. This classic book was written in 1916, nearly 100 years ago, but applies to us just as aptly as it did to his readers when first published. As a weapon in the self-help armoury it is recommended as part of the jigsaw of instruction.
