Learning from Model Railways
Young and old alike can enjoy building model railways. In fact, its one of those great hobbies that parents can enjoy along with their children.
Hornby railways have been with us since the end of the first World War. This was a guage '0' model that was powered with a clockwork, wind up motor. Hornby soon introduced an electric model that required a mains supply of 100 to 250 volts. Sensibly, by 1929 Hornby had developed a safe, 6 volt system.
Hornby train sets suit every level of interest, from beginner to enthusiast. Without doubt, building a railway system with your children is fantastic way to interact and spend time with them. It provides a basis for communication, cooperation and can be immensely educational. When parents play with their children they reinforce the parent-child bonds.
A model train system can be thought of as an aid to creative play. Children can imagine all sorts of stories unfolding around the railway system. A few accessories like buildings and model people can really bring the railway system alive.
All children need to play, its an essential part of the natural learning process. Parents playing with their children is particularly beneficial. Playing with your children is one of the best ways to learn about them. You will find out what interests them, where they have particular skills and what concerns them. Encouraging your child to make up stories that involve their model railway system is a great way to stimulate their creativity. Watching children, while they play, is a well known technique used to assess child development.
Putting together a model railway system. He clearly enjoyed the process of setting up the track and getting the system working and his enthusiasm was infectious. We made up some amusing stories involving the family members, represented by the model people around the track.
